English,as a worldly used language,its importance has gained broad consensus.English reading locates in important parts in the course of learning English language.However,many students' English reading level is not high and it does not improve performance enough.And domestic scholars have made many explorations and achieved many research results in how to improve students' English reading ability.The most representative is the research of the professor Wang Qiang?Chen Zehang and their teams.Among their research,they found that English reading ability and English reading character complement each other,English reading character is the motivation support for students to develop continuous reading,the cultivation and development in English reading character contributes to enhance English reading ability?Some researches from other scholars in domestic also show that English reading character plays a positive role in improving students' English reading ability,cultivating autonomous learning ability,fostering the comprehensive development of students and so on.This study is based on above researches.Through literature review at home and abroad,attempts to carry out a exploration of the connotation and constitutive elements of English reading character.In order to gain a preliminary understanding about the current situation of English reading character among high school students,this study select 189 student Grade one from Y middle school and S middle school in Shijiazhuang as objects to make a questionnaire survey.At the same have interviews with some English teachers and students participated in the questionnaire survey.This study emphasizes on four aspects of English reading character,including English reading habit,English reading motivation,English reading attitude and self-assessment.By summary and analysis to the survey result,founds the following questions:(1)senior one students of high school fail to develop good reading habits;(2)senior one students have little interest in English reading;(3)the attitude of senior one students towards English reading needs to be improved;(4)self-assessment level of senior one students needs to be enhanced.According to these problems,there are corresponding countermeasures and suggestions for reference:(1)scientifically and systemally improve teachers' teaching design's ability in curriculum;(2)cultivate good English reading habits;(3)develop interests in English reading;(4)improve attitude on English reading studying;(5)enhance self-assessment level on English reading for developing English reading ability and reading character of high school students.
