In the Opinions of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China on comprehensively deepening the reform of teaching force in the new era.It is pointed out that high-quality compound teachers with solid subject matter knowledge,profound educational sentiment and outstanding professional competence should be needed.Therefore,teachers’ subject matter knowledge,as one of the important embodiments of high-quality compound teachers,has been paid more and more attention by researchers.In addition,English subject matter knowledge is not only the core component of teachers’ teaching,but also an important part of students’ learning.Mastering and applying the structure of English subject matter knowledge can not only support teachers to carry out effective teaching,but also play a key role in students’ development.Therefore,it is of great significance to explore the current situation of high school English teachers’ structure of subject matter knowledge.This study aims to clarify the level of senior high school English teachers’ structure of English subject matter knowledge in Tianjin.The research questions include the situation of the level of English language and culture knowledge,the situation of the level of the knowledge of universal rules of language and the situation of the orientation of English beliefs about subject matter.This study is based on the structure of English subject matter knowledge,which is constructed by Li Xiao.Administrating the method of questionnaire,the current situation of 92 senior high school English teachers’ level of English subject matter knowledge in Tianjin were found out.In addition,eight teachers were chosen to conduct the interview.Finally,according to the relevant research data,the author found that senior high school English teachers in Tianjin have a certain understanding and recognition of English subject matter knowledge.The majority of the teachers have a high level of English language and cultural knowledge,but they have an intermediate level of the knowledge of universal rules of language.In terms of the orientation of English beliefs about subject matter,most of the senior high school English teachers are function-oriented,while the minority of them are rule-oriented and skill-oriented.In view of the above conclusions,corresponding feasible suggestions were put forward.As for some of the teachers do not have a comprehensive understanding of the structure of subject matter knowledge,schools should provide more lectures,training and further study opportunities about the structure of English subject matter knowledge.As for some teachers’ level of subject matter knowledge is not high,cooperation and communication among teachers at different development stages can improve the level of SMK.As for some teachers do not know how to apply the structure of English subject matter knowledge in teaching,teachers should pay attention to the frontier of the structure of English subject matter knowledge,improve theoretical knowledge and deepen their understanding in practice.
