After the revision of English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017 Edition),it officially transforms the curriculum goal into the English subject key competencies.As one of the main contents of English subject key competencies,thinking quality plays an increasingly important role in the process of deepening the reform of the content and form of the college entrance examination.How to cultivate students’ thinking quality in senior high school English classes has become one of the hotspots in foreign language teaching research.Since the new college entrance examination of Hunan adopted the form of writing after reading,teachers and students have been ushered into a new round of challenges.In view of the unbalanced development of students’ reading and writing skills,how to improve students’ reading and writing skills and promote their higher-order thinking skills has become a question that every English teacher should study and explore in depth.Therefore,in order to meet the requirements of the new curriculum and the new college entrance examination and to cultivate students’ English thinking quality better,it is necessary to survey the current situation of students’ thinking quality in reading and writing classes,which is the most obvious change in senior high school English,and to put forward relevant suggestions according to the problems existing in the current situation.Based on the interaction theory between thinking and language,Bloom’s taxonomy of educational objectives and the constructivism theory,this study conducted a questionnaire survey on 289 students from three senior high schools in Shaoyang,Hunan,and interviewed 12 students and 6 English teachers based on the analysis of the questionnaire.The questionnaire is developed based on the English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017 Edition)and its interpretation,as well as questionnaires from the perspective of students in related papers,including three dimensions of logical,critical and innovative thinking.This study explores the following three questions:(1)What is the overall current situation of students’ thinking quality in senior high school English reading and writing classes in Shaoyang?(2)What are the analysis results of students’ thinking quality grouped by genders and scores on the cultivation of students’ thinking quality in senior high school English reading and writing classes in Shaoyang?(3)What problems exist in the cultivation of students’ thinking quality in senior high school English reading and writing classes in Shaoyang and what are the main causes of the problems?The study found that:(1)The overall thinking quality of students is in the middle level,in which the performance of logical thinking is better,and critical thinking and innovative thinking are relatively weak,and the development of each dimension is uneven.(2)There are significant differences in the thinking quality of students of different genders.The overall thinking quality of boys and the thinking quality of each dimension are higher than that of girls.There are significant differences in the thinking quality of students with different grades.The students with better grades have better thinking quality.(3)The students’ thinking quality mainly has the following problems.First,students’ constructive ability is poor.Second,students are afraid to challenge authority and cannot think from multiple perspectives.Third,students are not flexible enough to come up with unique and novel ideas.The main reasons are that students cannot fully develop their thinking quality due to their limited English proficiency;the schoolwork burden is heavy,and students have no time to take into account the development of thinking quality;under the pressure of teaching tasks,schools and teachers do not pay enough attention to the cultivation of thinking quality.Based on the above research results,the researcher suggests that relying on high school English reading and writing teaching to cultivate students’ thinking quality should start from three aspects: schools,teachers,and students.Schools should create a good cultivation environment for teachers and students.Teachers should dig deep into teaching texts,set up effective questions,and change the teaching mode,so as to actively cultivate students’ thinking quality.Students should change their learning attitudes,cultivate their thinking qualities consciously,and strengthen group learning.
