The study and translation of Western academic works have been put more and more attention since China's open-up policy, which leads to more and more introduction of Western works and developmental needs in the variety of scientific fields. The translation report is finished in the guide of Eugene A.Nide's functional equivalence theory. The translation source is from Michael C.Leff's Modern Sophistic and the Unity of Rhetoric, which is the second chapter of The Rhetoric of the Human Sciences:language and argument in scholarship andpublic affairs.Under the guide of Eugene A.Nide's functional equivalence theory, the report is written from three aspects:grammatical word, kernel sentences and isomorphism. On grammatical word,Nida opens a new concept,he throws away traditional grammatical concept and divides them into seven genres. As for long and complicate sentence,Nida believes that splitting the long sentence into several simple sentences can deal with the translation problems.Furthermore,Nida thinks that translator should try to make the target readers feel the same as the source readers when they are reading your work.Functional equivalence theory provides us translation strategies in dealing with the problem. The purpose of this report is to provide advice for the translation of academic works and raise more attention for academic translation.
