Translation Report Of China:Promise Or Threat?(Chapters 3-4)

The translator selected chapter 3 and chapter 4 from China:Promise or Threat?by German sociologist Helle as the translation material for this translation report.Chapter 3 firstly introduces Thucydides’ Trap,and then discusses whether China is a threat or not to the world by comparing the ancient classics and historical figures and by citing theories of some famous people.Chapter 4 mainly talks about religions,and it introduces in detail the definition,original and development of religions and so on.The translator finds that the choice of right meanings of words and the translation of long sentences are two main difficult points in translation.To deal with them,the translator chose the functional equivalence theory by Eugene Nida as the guide for this translation practice,and adopted different translation methods and techniques such as amplification,omission,conversation,inversion,etc.in order to solve difficulties in translation in such article,and to offer reference to them.This report includes four parts.The first part tells the source and meaning of this translation project and introduces the author and main idea of the work.The second part tells the whole translation process from preparation,translation to proof-reading.The third part introduces the difficulties in the translation process,the functional equivalence theory and the application.The last part makes a summary on this translation practice and tells the enlightenment and unsolved problems.Through this translation practice,the translator finds that the functional equivalence theory guides translation of such texts well and the correct use of translation skills plays an important role in translation.In addition,the translator realizes that we should first understand relevant background knowledge before translation.The translator has deeply understood her weak points in this translation practice and has decided to do more translation practices to improve the translation level.
