This translation project report focuses on the translation of chapter viii,ix,x from China:Promise or Threat?by Horst Jurgen Helle.The book was published in 2017.The three chapters focus on the cultural differences between China and the West throughout the history.On the basis of the western scholar's studies of Chinese culture,the book looks into the changes in the source and limitations of the rulers' power from the Yin,Shang and Zhou dynasties to Confucius' days and points out the cultural differences between China and the Western world from various aspects like the standard pattern of social behaviors,religion,kinship systems and family relationship.With certain reference value to researchers on studies of the exchanges between China and the West,this translation project aims to look at the cultural differences between China and the western society from the perspective of a westerner,offering a new perspective to researchers in the realm and history enthusiasts to learn about ancient and contemporary China and the speculations as well as the reflections the rising China has brought to the West.Under the instruction of the theory of text types proposed by Katharina Reiss,the report analyzes the problems in the translation process and lists the corresponding translation strategies.During the translation process,the main difficulties are the translation of words and complex sentences.In order to deliver a faithful and expressive translation,the author flexibly adopted different translation methods,such as addition,omission,conversion,translation compensation and rearrangement of sentences.This report consists of four chapters:Chapter One,introduction to the translation project;Chapter Two,details about the translation process;Chapter Three,choice of translation theory and the solutions to the challenging problems,which is the focus of this report;Chapter Four,the conclusion,including the lessons learned,inspiration and the remaining problems.
