The English-Chinese translation report is based on the third and sixth chapters of The World Broke in Two:Virginia Wool.f,T.S.Eliot,D.H.Lau,re.nce,E.M.Forster,and the Year that Changed Literature(2017),written by Bill Goldstein. The excerpts translated mainly describe that E.M.Forster,a famous English modernist novelist, was lost in the writing ebb when he felt depressed due to double burdens of his family and homosexuality. The book is classified into profile in documentary literary works, which takes real figures as objects and specifically describes their living and mental conditions, thus reflecting the characteristics of their respective time. The authenticity, literariness and contemporaneity of this literary style decide that the translator should take into account both the content and the form of the translated version.Considering the linguistic and stylistic features of the original text, the author chooses Newmark's semantic translation and communicative translation as the theoretical guidance in translating this work. The accuracy requires the translator to use semantic translation which should be faithful to the culture of the source language, and emphasize the flavor of the original text. The literariness requires the translator to adopt communicative translation which should pay attention to the needs of the target language readers and underline the efficiency of information transmission. Therefore, the author takes examples from the third and sixth chapters of the original work as case studies, expounding the application of semantic translation and communicative translation in translation practice, and discussing appropriate translation methods with corresponding examples,so as to improve the quality of the translated version and the author's translation ability. The translation report includes four parts:the first part introduces the source, significance, analysis of the project and the structure of this report. The second part is about task description, including pre-translation preparation, translation process and post-translation processing. The third part is case analysis, introducing the selected translation theory combined with specific examples. The fourth part is the conclusion, which summarizes the revelations and lessons of the translation practice and puts forward the problems to be solved.
