A Translation Project Report On Salem Is My Dwelling Place:A Life Of Nathaniel Hawthorne(Chapter 10 To Chapter 11)

This is a project report on the translation of chapter 10 and chapter 11 of the book Salem Is My Dwelling Place:A Life of Nathaniel Hawthorne written by Edwin Haviland Miller,who depicted in the book the whole life of Hawthorne through his thorough research on the extensive documents and materials he collected.During the translation process,many difficulties and problems were encountered by the author of this report,which mainly include:translation of words and phrases in their specific contexts;translation of long sentences,of which the structures are often highly complicated;and the translation of quoted passages from different sources with distinct personal styles.To solve the problems mentioned above,the author adopted Peter Newmark's Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation theories for guidance.The author gathered information on the cultures of America in the 1900s from multiple sources to fully understand the background of the events depicted in the original text.For complicated sentences,the author tried to get a rough translation through semantic translation first,and then refine it by communicative translation to get the best translation.For the quoted passages,the author conducted detailed analysis to identify the style elements of the original text and made best efforts to maintain those elements in the translation.The author has learned a lot through the translation practice.To be a qualified translator,one needs not only solid bilingual skills,but also a deep understanding of translation theories,profound knowledge of the cultural background of both the source and target languages,as well as strong proofreading skills.The author will continue to work on these aspects to establish himself as a fully competent translator.
