A Subtitle Translation Report On The Tale Of Chinese Medicine

Under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s "communicative translation" and "semantic translation",this thesis takes the subtitles of the first and second episodes of documentary The Tale of Chinese Medicine as the target translation practice,and combines the characteristics of subtitle translation to adopt different translation strategies to complete and analyze this translation practice.Firstly,this thesis discusses the significance of subtitle translation to the spread of TCM(traditional Chinese medicine)based on the background of The Tale of Chinese Medicine,the current situation of TCM development and subtitle translation.Secondly,after analyzing the characteristics of text and subtitle translation,this thesis discusses three major problems in practical translation,that is,the synchronism of subtitle translation,cultural transformation,verification and translation of TCM terms before the translation.And with Peter Newmarks’ mode of communicative and semantic translation.it applies some strategies,like literal and liberal translations,additional and lessened translations,combined and divided translations and so on to discuss how the actual translations are well conducted.This thesis aims to broaden foreigners understanding of the Chinese culture,promote the influence of the Chinese medicine in the world.Meanwhile,it gives me a good chance to translate the film subtitles into English as accurate as possible.
