| This translation report is based on the E-C translation project of rehabilitation medicine syllabus commissioned by Hainan Medical University(hereinafter HNMU).The purpose of this project is to introduce foreign experience in rehabilitation medicine courses to administrators and staff of HNMU,in the hope of providing a reference for the development of the education system of HNMU.The source text of the project comes from the master’s syllabus of the School of Medicine of the University of the West of England(hereinafter UWE),which consists of six programs representing six master’s syllabus areas. The author is responsible for the translation of master’s syllabus of rehabilitation medicine, which includes 14 small documents with over 15,000 words. The language of the original text is rich, professional and formal. It belongs to the informative text, which emphasizes the informative function of language.Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation theory are adopted to guide this report.Semantic translation focuses on reproducing the original text without changing the style and grammatical structure to make the translation readable. The original text involves many proper nouns, medical and educational polysemous terms, emphasizing the accuracy and objectivity of the content.Semantic translation can guide the translator to understand and translate the relevant terms of the original text in the specific context. Therefore, the translator adopts semantic translation as the theoretical guidance.Communicative translation pays more attention to reading experience of target readers and guides readers to better understand the original text. The translation strategy is flexible and it provides translation guidance for complex sentences,implicit-subject sentences, simple sentences,parallel-structure paragraphs and loose-structure paragraphs in the original text. Therefore, communicative translation acts as the guiding theory.Multiple translation methods are used by the translator under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation. For medical and educational polysemous terms, the translator employs the translation skill of contextualization under the guidance of semantic translation to determine its specific meaning. For the indefinite articles in the enumerated items, the translator adopts literal translation. In addition, based on the communicative translation, the translator makes annotations for terms representing foreign teaching auxiliary platforms.Conversion of part of speech and subject is applied in the translation of relevant words and sentences that cannot be understood when translated literally. For complex sentences, the methods of division and word order adjustment are chosen to make the translation more readable for target readers. For simple sentences, the combination is used to make the translation concise. As for parallelstructure paragraphs and loose-structure paragraphs, the addition of sequence numbers and logic separately is adopted to make paragraphs more coherent, etc. In short, while pursuing the accuracy and objectivity of the content and form of the translation, the translator strives to bring target readers the same reading experience as source language readers. The author hopes to explore the applicable effect and guiding significance of semantic translation and communicative translation theory in the rehabilitation medicine syllabus through the translation report, which can provide a reference for the translation of the similar text, and bring some inspirations for the further development and improvement of relevant disciplines in domestic medical colleges. |
