A Practice Report On C-E Translation Of Teleplay Subtitle

With the development of globalization and the rapid progress of science and technology,cultural exchanges between countries in the world are getting closer and closer.Movies and TV dramas carry many cultural details of a nation,and their expressions feature in vividness and diversity,offering the audience multiple options.Therefore,they have become an essential way of cultural exchange and communication.Chinese dramas have attracted audiences worldwide with their particularly vibrant types,historical connotations,and elaborate productions and varied narrative styles.For all audiences,the translation of subtitles is critical.Therefore,research on subtitle translation is now diversified.Subtitle translation practitioners and researchers aim to achieve better cultural exchanges.In order to better understand the translation of TV drama subtitle and improve the quality of subtitle translation,this report makes research and conclusions based on the author’s practice of Chinese-English translation of TV plays.The report firstly summarized the project translation criteria based on customer needs and translation requirements within the group.Then the author outlined the translation difficulties and problems encountered in implementing the project translation criteria due to the characteristics of the translation task,such as the lack of sufficient TV play context and the time and space limitation.Guided by semantic and communicative translation theory,the author analyzed and overcame the translation difficulties.The paper concluded that semantic translation and communicative translation play a meaningful guiding role in translating TV drama subtitles.Semantic translation focuses on the source language and can guide the translation of subtitles with profound cultural connotations,to reproduce the meaning and convey cultural content;Communicative translation is oriented by the target language recipient and can guide the translation of subtitles with excessive cultural differences,to send the understandable message.Moreover,the two can guide special subtitle translation issues such as subtitle space limitation and subtitle emotional expressions.
