The present paper is a report on my E-C translation of How to Read a Paragraph:The Art of Close Reading. This booklet is made up of three main parts. At the very beginning,it is more theoretical, explaining the what, why and how of critical reading. The second part is application of the first part in the form of exercises. The third part of Appendix relates to paraphrases, the logic of an article,a chapter,an essay,a textbook, etc. When the absence of critical thinking is prevalent in society at large, the booklet is intended to encourage teachers and students,as well as readers of other walks of life,to read critically and think and act critically.Drawing upon the Functionalist Translation Theory, the writer of this report has applied the theory to the translation of the booklet and come up with some translation methods or strategies. The process of this practice is composed of the following stages:1)making some preparations before setting down the translation work, including in-depth reading of the original book to be translated, background knowledge about the book, creating a glossary of terms,etc;2)the first draft of the translation;3)revisions of the first draft;4)revisions by the writer's supervisor and;5)finalizing the translation for further studies.Against the present social backdrop,MTI programmers should center on translation practice. Therefore, the present report represents the whole process of the writer's translation practice and reflections. The said practice and reflections can be concluded as follows:1)Great importance should be attached to knowledge of various professions and translation theories, which can serve as a guide for practice. In the process of E-C translation, the translator should first try to think in the language of the original text and then shift back to the language of the target text, which also can be termed as shifts in thought patterns.2)The process of translation should be attached more importance than its final product. In the whole process, the translator has to consider such factors as style and appropriate transformation of idiomatic expressions along with appropriate translation strategies.3)A qualified translator with professional ethics should always consult colleagues and teachers as well as dictionaries. What's more,pre-work preparations, proofreading and revisions are all of vital importance to produce good translations.4)All appropriate translation skills and strategies come from practice and practice and practice along with reflections on practice.
