English reading teaching has become a major part of the whole English teaching in senior high school.However,when looking at the present reading class,it is easy to find that vocabulary teaching as well as grammar teaching accounts for a large proportion in English reading teaching,which made reading class become mechanized and simplistic.Because of this,students may feel bored and lack of enough interests and motivation in English reading class thus will lead to low teaching effect.And in order to change this situation,the purpose of this research is to evaluate the effect of competitive groups in the senior high school English reading teaching which based on the theory of Achievement Motivation.The competitive groups activities is a teaching method which makes good use of senior school students' characteristics such as stronger sense of self-respect,curiosity and honor.The main questions of our research are as follows:Firstly,can competitive groups activities used in senior high school improve students'total marks and reading marks?Secondly,are there any changes of their attitudes toward English reading after the experiment?Lastly,can competitive groups activities promote students' cooperative awareness?The study was carried out in two senior classes in Fuzhou Overseas Senior High School.The former is the experimental class and the latter is the control class.The students' in two classes are taught in different ways.In order to prove the positive effects of using Competitive groups activities,a comparison was made in terms of student's learning interest,learning marks,reading marks and cooperative awareness Tests,classroom observation and questionnaires were used to collect data.Besides,the necessity and restrictive factors on the implementation of Competitive groups activities were studied so as to confirm the teaching effect,feasibility and implementation of Competitive groups activities teaching method.After a term's experiments on the research and analyzing the data,the results are as follows:Firstly,the students in Class One(the experimental class)have higher learning interests and the teaching effect are better.What's more,they got higher marks in English tests.Secondly,for those who were in lower learning level,the improvement in tests further enhanced their learning confidence thus corrected their learning attitudes.Finally,students' cooperative awareness in Class One is better than that of Class two.In all,this research has provided a good example in boosting students' reading interest for senior high English teachers and can be a new teaching method in English reading.
