Content-based instruction(CBI)integrates subject-matter content and language forms in the teaching process in order to improve students'academic knowledge and develop their foreign language skills as well.Lots of empirical studies implemented by scholars abroad show that CBI has a positive effect on second language teaching.Thus,in recent years,many scholars at home have carried out some theoretical and empirical studies of CBI on English teaching.And some results have shown that CBI can help improve students' English level.However,most of these studies are focused on college students,and there are relatively few studies on high school students.Therefore,this study intends to apply CBI to the teaching of English reading at a certain senior high school to explore the following questions:1.Which one is more suitable for developing senior high school students' reading ability,traditional teaching method or CBI model?2.What effects do CBI model have on senior high school students' English reading proficiency and interest in English reading?3.Can CBI model improve senior high school students'English proficiency?Two parallel classes are from Grade One of Jiaozhou No.1 Senior High School,Qingdao,Shandong province.These students are about the same age and have similar English learning experience.The students are divided into two classes:one class conducts the teaching of English reading through the CBI model,and the other class adopts the grammar-translation method.The experiments of both classes last for 4 months.This study uses achievement tests and questionnaires to find out the changes of their reading comprehension ability,their English proficiency and attitudes towards English reading learning.And SPSS23.0 is used to analyze the survey data.The results are as follows:1.Compared with the traditional reading teaching model,applying CBI to the teaching of English reading is more suitable for developing students' reading ability.2.The application of CBI to the teaching of English reading can enhance students'interest in English reading.3.The application of CBI to the teaching of English reading can improve students'performance in English reading and students'English proficiency.The results of this study have shown that the application of CBI to the teaching of English reading at senior high schools can,to some extent,make students integrate into class and become more active in classroom learning.The English teacher provides lots of language materials and text-based background information for students,which can help them enrich their knowledge,arouse their interest in reading and improve their reading ability and English proficiency constantly.
