Reading is one of the most important English skills and hence an indispensable part of English teaching in high schools. And it is always a major portion in the College Entrance English Examination. In recent years, popular science text, one of the required reading topics in National High School English Curriculum Standards, has been included as a must-test part in the Examination. However, students' popular science reading proficiency and teachers' popular science teaching competence might not live up to the requirements in the Standards and the Exam.Rather, many students lack interests and reading strategies or skills for English popular science texts;some teachers lack relevant scientific knowledge and have yet to establish teaching patterns and methods that suit the characteristics of popular science texts. The relevant researches show that narrow reading is closely related to readers' reading interest and ability. It is beneficial to promote the accumulation of vocabulary, background knowledge, grammatical feature, and discourse pattern about one topic, and therefore improve readers' reading interest and ability in the topic. The research attempts to apply narrow reading in English popular science text teaching in high school. It tries to find the effect of narrow reading on students' reading interest and ability in reading English popular science,as well as their overall reading ability. The research subjects are 100 tenth graders in two classes in a high school, with 50 in each(experimental class and control class). The research lasts for three months and uses such instruments as pre-tests,post-tests,and questionnaires. The results of SPSS data analysis suggest that narrow reading effectively improves subjects' reading interest and ability of English popular science texts,as well as their overall reading ability. However, the findings need to be further verified because of its small sample size, short experiment duration, and rough standards for material selection.
