Roberto Bolano is a Chilean writer who once again caught the attention of the world after The Latin American Boom.Exile is not only the experience of Bolano himself,but also the universal state of the characters in his novels.This thesis takes the two works,Los Detectives Salvajes and 2666,as examples to explore the theme of exile in Bolano's works.This thesis has been divided into four parts:The first part is the introduction,which briefly analyzes the importance of exile during his writing career,and explains the reasons for choosing two works for specific text analysis.The second analyzes the particularity of his view on exile which is mainly base on the three points,including exile and homesickness,exile and literature,and exile and courage.This part of the analysis is mainly based on the article on the topic of exile in the essay collection Between Parentheses.The third part analyzes his early exile writings with Bolano's first novel,Los Detectives Salvajes This part first analyzes the third part of the novel,namely the symbolism of the tragic outcome that Lima and Belano witnessed the death of Cesarea;Then,the thesis focuses on analyze exile life continued by Lima and Belano during twenty years,mainly compares this two characters with Amadeo,Font and other characters,and then explore how Bolano sees the relationship between exile and identity of writer;Finally,the thesis analyzes three experiences of Lima and Belano in the novel,and explores the common significance behind these experiences.The fourth part takes Bolano's posthumous 2666 as an example to analyze its late writing of exile.First,the first part and the second part focus on the character of Archimboldi,dividing his experience of exile into two stages which is the early alienation and the rebirth of the middle,and then we can see how Bolano convey his views through this exile on some subjects including history,evil,violence,etc.The third part first illustrates the chasm between Archimboldi and femicide of Santa Teresa,and then analyzes the relationship between Amalfitano and Archimboldi and the final focuses on the connection between Amalfitano's life in Santa Teresa and his view of exile.Through the content of the full text,we can see Bolano's writing of exile was maturing.At the same time,we can also see the profound connotations of exile in his works.
