Conceptual metaphor theory greatly broadens people's understanding of metaphor.Metaphor is not simply a linguistic phenomenon and a rhetorical device, but also an indispensable cognitive means to construct people's cognitive system. In this thesis, robin metaphors are selected as the object of study. As a familiar bird to westerners, the robin has various legends and symbolic meanings and is a key image in English poetry. What's more,as the crystallization of English culture and art,English poetry contains abundant images. However, there are relatively few studies on the robin in poetry compared with other birds. The study found that the robin represents different target domains in poems with different artistic conceptions and emotional tones, mainly including the following three categories: positive concepts such as hope and freedom, negative concepts such as death and neutral concepts such as past life.Through the summary of the collection of poems and the metaphorical features of the robin, the close connection between metaphor and our daily life experience, culture and psychological cognition is clarified. The purpose of this study is to better demonstrate the inherent mechanism of metaphor through the study of concrete examples.Based on similar cognition and the understanding of the relevant cultural background of the poem, readers can establish the connection between the robin and different target domains and further understand the different metaphorical meanings expressed by the image of the robin. The study on the metaphorical meanings of the robin in poetry opens up a new perspective for us to understand the western culture and enriches the study of the image of the robin. In addition, concentrating on the generation of distinct target domains of the robin and the cognitive factors behind them can deepen our understanding of the poet's thinking and their creations. It also has certain significance for improving individual poetry appreciation ability, the ability of analysis and application of metaphor.
