Guofeng-the Book of Odes is a collection of Chinese regional folk ballads,they present various and distinct regional cultural characteristics on the basis of different custom.According to the origins of ballads-the Annals of Lu Buwei,the ballads in the remote ages were categorized into four cardinals.As the classical representatives of Guofeng,Chen Feng,Zhou Nan and Shao Nan—as known as Ernan,this thesis take them as an overall subjects,exploring the regional characteristics of south ballads in both geographical and cultural ways.This thesis consists of four parts as below,attempting to probe the original cultural state of Guofeng in the south:In the first part,it gives the general remarks on regional cultural ecology of the south in Zhou Dynasty.Based on the analysis of four cardinals' political and geographical patterns in Western Zhou dynasty,integrating the existed geopolitical theory that Zhou lies in the central of world,and textual researching the boundaries of southern parts of Zhou dynasty in the historical materials,it substantiates the similarity of Chen Feng and Ernan,and classify Chen Feng as south ballads,together with Ernan—which is assumed the only two classics by the academic circles,sketching out a cultural outlook of south Guofeng in multi angels.The second part of this thesis mainly interprets the regional culture in the Ernan.By means of probing the title origin of Ernan and combing through other literature on and regional textual research,its territory can be identified between the Yellow River to the north,the Yangtze River and the Han River to the south.Being influenced by the southward spreading of rites of the Zhou,poems about love and marriage were found that centered on MiaoJian ceremony—new couples should paid homage at ancestral temple before their marriage become official under the patriarchal clan system,as well as the poems that highlighted the activities and spirits of ancestor worshiping.In the meanwhile,it restores to the original state of southern culture which nourished the Ernan;and demonstrates the remaining of polygamy in the love and marriage poems,which derived from the special mixture cultural characteristics of Bashu and Jingchu.Furthermore,as the media in the sacrificial poems,affection is a distinguished feature in Chu clan's sacrificial ceremonies;in cursing poems,the remnant of primitive witchcrafts and multi totems worship are also found.In the third part,it illustrates the regional culture in Chen Feng.Due to the geographical and historical evolution,vassal state of Chen deeply affected by integrated of multi cultures.In the very beginning of pre-Chen,as a result of a relic of sun and bird totem worship of Eastern Yi in remote ages,the East Gate poetry and Gao Mei poetry was come into being respectively,when sacrificing to the Gao Mei,people were dancing with feathers decorated on their bodies.Thereafter,along with Gui Man became the first feudal lord in Chen,it was infiltrated by rites of the Zhou,making the love and marriage poems reserve of identity to the marriage within the aristocracy of Zhou;And showing a emotional traits that refrain their passion with rites.The northward spreading of Chu culture interfused into Chen,with the mutual infiltration local custom of each other,making Chen Ballads reflect unrequited love complex under the affecting of witch elements.The fourth part provides an overview of regional cultural style of Guofeng in the south.It summarizes the influences on aesthetic features and art style to the Guofeng by the general southern regional culture,and exhibits the regional cultural features of southern ballads in aspects of emotion language and art,etc.Based on textual analysis,this thesis integrates the study of regional culture in the south,attempting to reveal the generating mechanism of interactive between literature and culture.
