This report is based on the E-C translation of A Beginner’s Guide to Being Mental, which was written by Natasha Devon and published in May,2018.In this psychological text,mental-health issues were given with regards to anxiety,depression,post-traumatic stress disorder and so on.Four chapters of this book were chosen to be translated including the introduction of important psychological concepts and helpful guidance for a good mental health. There are large amounts of adjectives serving for describing mental state and characteristics of objects. The meaning of these adjectives varies under specific context and different collocations, which brings great difficulties to translation and calls for the translator’s accurate comprehension and appropriate expression. In order to deal with the translation difficulties of adjectives, five methods including semantic variation,conversion,amplification,four-character phraseology and restructuring are used to ensure the accuracy and the readability in the translation process.Based on text features and translation barriers,Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory is applied as the guidance for the sake of readership’s acceptance and comprehension. This report is aimed to make a further exploration for the translation methods of adjectives in the psychological text and hopes to offer referential value.
