Features Of Chinese Speeches And Explicitation In Chinese To English Consecutive Interpretation

Chinese is a highly parataxis language,while English is a highly hypotaxis language.Therefore,in the Chinese to English interpretation,interpreters often apply explicitation in order to convey the logic and meaning more clearly.The Chinese speeches at official press conferences are often delivered with prepared written versions,which show distinctive Chinese speech features.Such speeches can be perfectly interpreted by applying explicitation.Based on the mock conference interpretation of the press conference of the 4th World Internet Conference,the author studied the features of Chinese speeches and the explicitation of Chinese to English interpretation.The author hopes to provide certain guidance for other interpreters.Through case analysis,the author explains the features of the Chinese speeches,its impact on the interpreter's performance,and specific methods to apply explicitation.The author summarizes four typical Chinese speech features in this mock interpretation:(textual meaning)complex logic in long sentences,(conceptual meaning)fuzzy cultural terms,(conceptual meaning)official expressions with Chinese characteristics,and(interpersonal meaning)routine greetings.Aiming at the four features,the author puts forward four specific skills to apply explicitation:to make explicit the logic in long sentences,to make explicit meanings of fuzzy terms,to make explicit core concepts of official expressions,and to make explicit the speaker's intention.In the end,based on the four specific skills of applying explicitation,the author puts forward three general methods improving interpreting quality.
