An Analysis On The Phenomenon Of Explicitation In Chinese-English Interpretation

Interpretation plays an increasingly important role as cooperation and exchanges among countries become more frequent. In order to improve the quality of interpretation and facilitate communication, scholars recognize explicitation in interpretation research as an important phenomenon. Since parataxis is a dominant feature of Chinese language, the role of explicitation is more prominent in Chinese-English interpretation. Through analyzing the explicitation in Chinese-English interpretation, the author intents to improve the quality of language output, facilitates listeners’understanding and interpreters’ practice.The research target of this paper is explicitation in Chinese-English interpretation. Based on Klaudy’s definition and classification of explicitation and current research findings of explicitation in translation and interpretation, this paper analyzes the press conference materials of Premier Wen Jiabao of2009.2010and2011and re-classifies explicitation in Chinese-English interpretation according to its specific characteristics. The paper also gives suggestions to interpreters on the occasions that explicitation should be used after summarizing the reasons of using explicitation from previous researches.This paper is divided into five chapters. Chapter1introduces the background, significance and research methods of the paper. Chapter2reviews the current research situation of explicitation in interpretation, and elaborates the theoretic foundation of this paper. Chapter3classifies explicitation in Chinese-English interpretation into explicitation of structure, meaning, link and culture. Chapter4points out the reasons for explicitation in Chinese-English interpretation and suggests the occasions that explicitation be used in Chinese-English interpreting. The last chapter includes the conclusion, suggestion and discussion about the limits and prospects of the research.
