In conjunction with the advancement of globalization and with China's reform and opening policy,communication between different languages and cultures becomes more and more important in China.Interpreting activities play the part of carrier,bearing great significance for intercultural communication.As a newly established program,MTI program is facing great opportunities and challenges when the number of MTI students is increasing steadily.According to the relevant literature,plenty of scholars have explored the field of interpreting from various perspectives.However,few of them focus on the factors affecting MTI students' interpreting performance.It is necessary to put forward a summary of comprehensive strategies for solving difficulties and improving interpreting abilities.With respect to this study,the author aims to assist MTI students to be cognizant of and avoid the problems during interpreting activities,so as to perform better.The thesis aims to explore the factors affecting MTI students' interpreting performance and provide some strategies.The author conducts a survey involving 64 MTI students who major in interpreting from all the universities with MTI program in Shandong province.This thesis falls into six chapters.It firstly introduces research background,and then states the significance of this study.Chapter Two and Chapter Three focus on relevant literature and research methods respectively.Chapter Four and Chapter Five list the findings and analyze them with existing data based on the previous studies.In the end,the thesissummarizes the research findings,points out the limitations and makes some implications for deeper research.It is found that a series of factors have influenced interpreting performance.They are divided into external factors and internal factors in this thesis.Internal factors include low language ability,lack of extra-linguistic knowledge,memory load,physical and psychological factor,interpreting theories and strategies,and professionalism.The external elements encompass the unfamiliarity with the spokesman,speech content,setting and equipment condition.Therefore,interpreters are often faced with various challenges during the process of interpreting.Based on the findings of the study,the paper offers some suggestions regarding various critical abilities that MTI students should be equipped with: language ability,general knowledge,interpreting skills,physical and psychological quality and occupation quality for a better performance.
