Born in a literary family in late Qing Dynasty,Zhang Mojun(1884-1965)was edified by the democratic and revolution thinking of enlightened parental education.Under the historical background beset by domestic strife and foreign aggression,she was one of the few advanced women affected by reform thoughts.She called for revolution,run schools and newspapers,and joined in associations.Her public participation enthusiasm was not inferior to that of men.Simultaneously,she was also adept at poetry,prose and calligraphy.Zhang Mojun was a famous revolutionist,educator,litterateur,female activist,calligrapher and collector in modern times.She once underwent the turbulence in wartime,experienced the cultural geographical landscape in the east and the west,turned widowed in her middle age,and immigrated to Taiwan in her old age.Such rich and rugged life experience determines the wide scope of related historical scenes,from Hunan and Shanghai in late Qing Dynasty to Jiangsu and Northwest region in early Republic of China,and Europe,America and the South Seas in around the 1920s.Therefore,comparing with former talented woman literature,her works appear to be more extensive and profound.While in comparison with feminine literature after May Fourth Movement,her works possess the transitional significance from tradition to modernity.Her works contain all sorts of genres including poetry,verse,ode,and translated novels and extensive subjects including lyric,aspiration,dedication,travel notes and religion.The paper takes the poetry,verse,ode,and translated novels of Zhang Mojun as the reference,and combines the subject and style of her works with her lifetime as a new woman from the following aspects.The part of Introduction introduces research objective,significance and method,and makes a literature review about the research condition of Zhang Mojun in the mainland and Taiwan.Chapter One begins with historical background to retrospect the emergence of feminist thoughts in late Qing Dynasty,and accordingly discusses the experience and mind course of Zhang Mojun from a traditional talented woman to a new woman in modern times.Moreover,it also investigates her far-reaching paternal erudition,Qu Yuan’s Sao Style in Hunan,elegant poetry education outlook,overseas experience and dedication to the education career.Chapter Two primarily explores the marital relations and literary works of Zhang Mojun as a new woman,and illustrates the lifetime of her husband Shao Yunchong,their love story,shared revolutionary ambition,happy married life and mourning upon the death of her husband.The aim is to restore the genuine marriage of a new woman who breaks up a series of limitations in traditional society like age to find a like-minded revolutionary mate.Chapter Three,Four and Five respectively start from the perspective of gender and space to go into the experience about how Zhang Mojun entered public space to run newspaper and school,devoted herself to education reform,joined in association activities,expanded social circle and proactively constructed her image as a new woman in modern times.Chapter Three analyzes her role as modern newspaper copywriter and founder,and makes a brief introduction to her publications and dedication to newspaper.Chapter Four takes the Eye Shadow Case on Feminine Newspaper of China as an example,attempting to research ZhangMojun’s translated literature from the perspectives of theme selection,artistic innovation and educational function.Chapter Five narrates her practice and thoughts in modern education reform.Chapter Six presents her work in South Society and poetry anthology and summarizes the content and style of her publications in the periodicals of South Society.The part of Conclusion reviews the life course of Zhang Mojun,including her view on woman’s rights,literature and marriage,reflects over the relation between"new" and "old","conservatism" and "radicalization","tradition" and "modernity"and makes objective assessment on the contribution of Zhang Mojun as a new woman in modern times. |
