E-C Translation Report On Walmart 2017annual Report(Excerpt):Tactics For Translating Sentences With Causal Relation

This report draws on the E-C translation of an economic text.The original material is Walmart 2017 annual report.It summarizes the financial status and operating condition of Walmart in the past year.There are several terms and compound sentences in the text.The task of the translation is to represent the style,content and language of the original text.This report is concerned chiefly with the difficulty in translating sentences with causal relation.The difficulty is divided into two aspects:(1)difficulty in translating sentences with explicit causal relation;(2)difficulty in translating sentences with implicit causal relation.The Communicative Translation Theory proposed by Newmark means translators should attempt to produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the original.When translating,translators can adjust the style of the original texts,eliminate ambiguity,and even correct the mistakes in the original texts instead of faithfully mechanically and literally translating the original texts.According to the Communicative Translation Theory,translators need to achieve a certain purpose of communication and have a specific readership,therefore,the translated texts would break the limitations of the original texts.With the framework of the Communicative Translation Theory,the difficulties of this translation project can be classified into correctly displaying the logic between sentences according to the purpose of communication.Therefore,tactics for translating sentences with causal relation are proposed as follows:(1)in terms of translating sentences with explicit causal relation,using reference items and using discourse markers;(2)in terms of translating sentences with implicit causal relation,adding conjunctions and adding adverbs.It is shown that the above mentioned tactics can effectively and efficiently solve the translation problems in this project,which will hopefully provide useful guidance and reference for the author and other translators to finish E-C translation of such economic texts.
