Improving children’s well-being is always a shared concern around the world,and UNICEF has performed an essential role in safeguarding the rights of children,protecting them from harm,promoting their healthy growth,etc.In recent years,as economic growth markedly increases and people’s lives steadily progress at home,the Chinese government and charity organizations have paid attention to children’s welfare all the more.UNICEF Annual Report 2018,released in June 2019,profiles new attempts that UNICEF has made to deliver better service for children.Some practices are invaluable for Chinese charity organizations to draw upon.Therefore,the present author chose the text(an excerpt)as the source material.The present report is directed toward the text(an excerpt)from the perspective of Newmark’s communicative translation in an attempt to summarize some methods for the Chinese translation of UN documents through handling translation difficulties at the lexical and syntactic levels.The report employed the qualitative-based research method.It analyzed the text type of the source text(hereinafter the ST)and discussed the linguistic features at the lexical,syntactic,and stylistic levels before translation difficulties were summarized.Based on communicative translation,the report then summarized eight techniques.Specifically,literal translation and literal translation plus annotation were adopted to ensure accuracy on the rendition of factual knowledge in the ST,such as proper nouns and professional terminologies.Besides,from the perspective of target readers,six techniques were employed to handle translation difficulties so that the rendition could be in coherence with the Chinese mode of thinking and expression habits,including amplification,conversion,and reconstruction.Meanwhile,the report also pointed out some deficiencies of the theory as the guidance in translating UN documents. |
