China began to implement the strategy of "culture going out" in 2004.Chinese literature fully represents the spirit and humanity of our country, and Chinese literature "going out"policy shoulders the important task of disseminating outstanding Chinese culture.Translation is one of the most important ways to achieve the goal.Based on the translation of Su Tong's short story "Her Names" which won the 16th Bai Hua Literature Award, the author elaborates on the methods of translating names and culture-gapped words from the perspective of repetition aesthetics.According to reception aesthetics, translators should attach great importance to target readers' horizon of expectation and give full play to translators' subjectivity to flexibly employ different translation methods. The final translation is expected to keep an appropriate aesthetic distance from target readers and enrich their aesthetic experience. In terms of translating names with different features, four methods are summarized.First, for ordinary names with no special meaning, transliteration is advised;second, names with special cultural connotations are translated with free translation;third, when the free translation cannot convey the name's most outstanding feature, adaptation is adopted;fourth, for the names with both deep meaning and unique pronunciation, transliteration with annotation is suggested.Regarding translating cultural-gapped words in the story, five methods are summarized, including transliteration with a footnote, free translation, free translation with footnote, substitution and omission.Under the guidance of reception aesthetics, the report, with the detailed analysis of typical examples, explores the translation methods of names and cultural-gapped words. It is hoped that these findings could be of referential value to later translators in the related field.
