This report is based on the English-Chinese translation of an around 10000-word excerpt from Island Story: British History for Children,commissioned by the Yeeyan.org.The purpose of this report is to discuss the difficulties encountered during the translation process and the solutions that the translator adopted in order to produce an readable target text.As the book Island Story: British History for Children uses culture-loaded terms and poems extensively,and portrays intricate characters,while the target text is aimed at children aged 6-12,the problem facing the translator is thus mainly the disparity between a sophisticated source text and a Chinese target audience with limited knowledge of British history and relatively low reception ability.Guided by the theory of reception aesthetics and adopting an descriptive approach,this thesis will analyze the aesthetic distance between the target audience and the source text of Island Story: British History for Children.The discussion will be divided into four parts: introduction,features of children's literature and reception aesthetics,case study,and conclusion.In the part of case study,the author will look into the methods adopted to preserve the characterization and musicality of the source text,and how to properly translate culture-loaded words.
