A Translation Report Of Chapter One Of The Language Of Comic Narratives Under The Cognitive Translation Theory

This is a translation report on The Language of Comic Narratives: Humor Construction in Short Stories(Chapter one)by Isabel Ermida,an associate professor in the university of Minho.The book is written in English and no Chinese versions have been released up to now.It is divided into seven chapters and explores deeply comic language narrative mechanism,humor explanation,construction and perception.A number of corpus of short stories have been quoted and analyzed from the view of language cognition,so that a pragmatic framework of humor studies has been established.The first chapter of the book reviews the basic concept,history and scope of humor,which lays a solid foundation for understanding the framework of the language of comic narratives.A considerable number of linguistic terms and expressions in terms of social communication,psychological perception and cognition have been applied for humor construction,understanding and perception,which has become the essentials and difficulties for this translation practice.Cognitive translation theory has been employed as a theoretic foundation to illustrate cognitive difficulties and translation techniques in the translation process,using literal translation,free translation and division to analyze cases including words,sentences,paragraphs and rhetorical languages,so as to testify and enrich cognitive translation theory.Through the translation process,the translator has following conclusions: the differences between cultures,backgrounds and ages indicates the importance of understanding cognition;the translator can divide and restructure source text to conform to the rules of target text.Besides,the Chinese readers will be helped to further understand the source text and learn more about the language of comic narratives through the translation practice.
