Nineteen Eighty-Four is the representative works of the English writer George Orwell, which describes a scary totalitarian society.“Space” is a significant element in this novel. The spaces where the characters in are invaded and monitored.Besides, the movements of the characters and the relationships among them present the spatial effects. The spatial narrative theory proposed by Israeli scholar Gabriel Zoran explores the space aspect, which is ignored by the traditional narrative study. The classified topographical space, the chronotopic space and the textual space respectively study the places in texts;the plots, the movements of the characters;the perspectives and the writer's selectivity of language. This thesis is based on the classification of Nineteen Eighty-Four' spaces and aims at studying the influences the spaces have on the making of the characters in Nineteen Eighty-Four and the narrative process. On the basis of the topographical space, the thesis analyzes how the spaces help shape the images of the characters;with the discussion of the chronotopic space, the influence the space imposes on the story level of the narrative process is illustrated;and with the interpretation of the textual space, the influence the space has on the discourse level of the narrative process is explained. The formation of the character's personality is closely related and supplementary to the atmosphere of the spaces. The main character Winston Smith's living space, working space, social space, sustenance space, dating space and imprisoning space mould his personality of repression, prudence, tanglement, awakening, freedom and despair;the spatial existence of Winston Smith and Juliet is vividly manifested by the description of their images. At the story level, the alternant space of the diaries, the interactive space structured by the relationships, the chronotopic transference of the dating space and the still space push the development of the plots. At the discourse level, the omniscient perspective and the character's limited perspective adopted by the narrator strengthen the readers' reading interest;the writer of the novel intentionally chooses the language and postpones the presentation of some specific spaces, which greatly intensifies the suspense. The application of the spatial narrative to interpret Nineteen Eighty-Four is to illustrate the space's irreplaceable influence on the shape of the characters, the narrative process and the deepening of the theme, thus offering a different perspective to reread Nineteen Eighty-Four so as to discover space's manipulation function in the domination. And this thesis expects to warn people to oppose the totalitarian domination, and this knowledge could contribute to the construction of the social democracy.
