With the development of economic globalization and the implementation of opening-door policy in China, people's living standard has been constantly improved, the demands for high quality of life has also improved, which,to some degree, makes tourism boom at an unprecedented pace.In recent years, more and more people have been eager to travel abroad, and they often tend to refer to the introduction and description about foreign customs and practices when making travel guide, and foreign travel notes can meet this demand to some extent. In The Yellow Envelope:One Gift,Three Rules, and a Life-Changing Journey Around the World,Kim Dinan, the author of the book, with the yellow envelope from her intimate friend, traveled in such countries as Ecuador,Peru,India,Nepal and Indonesia. The author guides readers to look at the world from different visual angles with her personal experiences and inner activities, and eventually presents readers with the fact that the yellow envelope includes not only money, but also the courage and kindness;what it brings to people is more than material security,it also brings people the confidence and comfort. The thesis consists of a translation of a 17,000-word English text, and a translation practice report based on the translation. The source text is selected from the chapters(1-4)of The Yellow Envelope:One Gift,Three Rules, and a Life-Changing Journey Around the World, written by Kim Dinan,an American writer and adventurer. The report describes the purpose and significance of the translation practice, introduces the contents of the book and the experiences of the author, concludes difficult points like the translation of pronouns, the translation of short sentences and the fulfillment of aesthetics in translating. The translator manages to deal with these difficulties by further consolidating English grammar knowledge,by analyzing sentences according to the context, and by learning more about the difference between Chinese and English.During the translation, based on Nida's functional equivalence, the translator mainly adopted amplification, division and recasting as the translation techniques in the translation practice, trying to fulfill both the literal equivalence and the sense equivalence. The translation practice report is finished with the findings that as for the translation of travel notes, apart from the guidance of translation theory and the application of translation techniques, the proper expressions should also be selected to conform to characters and circumstances, and the translator is expected to acquire more cultural background knowledge of the source text,to read a lot of parallel texts to ensure the target text can accord with Chinese expressions and satisfy the needs of the target readers. The translator is expecting to supply some reference for translators in dealing with such texts.
