The growth of a calligrapher is rooted in the society and history while also being closely related to historical background and era styles.Because of the specific characteristics and the irreplaceability of each era,putting calligraphers into his age is a necessary way to study them.The Qing Dynasty has a history of 260 years,and Yi Bingsui lived in the middle period of the Qing Dynasty exactly being the Qianlong period and Jiaqing period,which was the period for the rejuvenation of official script and the turning period for stone inscription study in Qing Dynasty.So,Yi Bingsui becoming the master of official script is closely connected with his living historical background.The official script reached its peak in the Eastern Han Dynasty and became fading in the Wei Jin Southern and Northern Dynasties.Until the rise of tablet studies in the Qing Dynasty,the ancient official script started to shine again.The Qing Dynasty is an important period for the history of calligraphy with many talents living in this dynasty because of its inheriting the Qin and Han Dynasties with its specific spirit of creation and strong character.The figure who is researched in this thesis,is one of these talents.Yi Bingshou was born in a great family with a good social status.He was skilled at four classifications of the calligraphy,among which he was best at the official script while making him the toppest man in the field of official script in Qing Dynasty to leave his name in history as a master of a generation.In the year of Emperor Qianlong 54,he had served as an official in the capital city for 18 years,and then he was appointed as the magistrate of Huizhou but he went into prison later and was appointed as the magistrate of Yangzhou again when things got clear.He loved the people with his integrity,lifelong faith and meritocratic achievements during his official period to make his calligraphy be grander and temperamental.His official script took an important place in the calligraphy world of the Qing Dynasty,which was complimented by Kang Youwei as a model for the later calligraphers.And this thesis would represent his style from the following aspects: hislife and friends;his artistic characteristics and his thought of Neo-Confucianism.He made himself the leader of the innovation of calligraphy who surpassed his time to be one of the most important representatives in the official script filed in Qing Dynasty with his bald,special and spacial style by inheriting the real spirit of Qin and Han Dynasties to purify lines,weaken the twists and turns and to replace the complexity with simplicity.The creation of the calligraphy is closely related to the styles of eras,which is also related to the influences of personalities.I feel a veritable and three-dimensional image of a Confucian intellectual with noble spirit of personality represented by his calligraphy.His artistic style was supported by his spiritual strength and his character was perfectly explained by his calligraphy style.
