The development of the newspaper and magazine publishing industry directly contributes to the prosperity of literary newspapers and periodicals.Novel magazines become a new carrier of the publishing and spreading of modern novels,influencing the creation and theory of novel.As one of "Four Major Novel Magazines in Late Qing Dynasty","Novel with Embroidered Portrait"is outstanding in both the number and the quality of novels.The illustrated stories make this magazine distinctive.This dissertation researches on the novels and embroidered portraits in the magazine.There are five chapters in the dissertation excluding Preface and Conclusion.Chapter 1 explores the causes of the rising and the development of novel magazines in the late Qing Dynasty,providing the basic information of the novel magazine.It also analyzes and generalizes the identities and features of authors and translators,from which we can see its influence on the novel magazines.Chapter 2 examines the activities and life of Boyuan Li,the chief editor of the magazine and analyzes his multi-identity,the development of mindset and the creation concepts.Chapter 3 studies the novels in the magazine,focusing on the novels that reflect the social reality,advocate revolution and calls for revitalization of industrialization and business.Additionally,it discusses about the artistic features by starting from language arts and the novel structure.Chapter 4 focuses on the embroidered portraits and explore the reason that the magazine is named by "Embroidered Portrait".To discuss the portraits' functions and features,the research studies four dimensions: introduction,aesthetic appreciation,demonstration of reality and enlightenment.The last chapter emphasizes the dissemination and influence of the magazine by collecting and studying the advertisements about "Novel with Embroidered Portrait" and discuss the connections between "Novel with Embroidered Portrait"and "novel revolution".
