A Study On Translation Integration Of Economic Terms In Yuan Fu

Yan Fu was an outstanding enlightenment thinker,translator and educator in modern China.He translated a large number of western classics in his life,successfully introducing and translating western politics,sociology,political economy and natural science into China.In Yan Fu's several translation works,Yuan Fu,the first Chinese translation version of Adam Smith's An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations(also called The Wealth of Nations),must be mentioned,which has a profound influence in Chinese academic circles and modern history.And Yan Fu's meticulous and workmanlike translation is its foundation,whose contributions should never be ignored.According to research,during the process of translation,Yan Fu has found that it was difficult to translate the economic terms in The Wealth of Nations,but scholars at home and abroad have done little research on how Yan Fu solved this problem.This thesis aims at exploring how Yan Fu has used his thoughts of translation integration to translate the economic terms in this book,hoping to enrich the research on this topic.After doing close reading and comparative analysis of three texts,which include Adam Smith's English source text,Yan Fu's rendering Yuan Fu,and a contemporary scholar Yang Jingnian's translation version,the thesis has summarized the main integration strategies and integration methods that have been used by Yan Fu when he translated the economic terms in this book.What's more,the thesis has also conducted a careful study about the historical background in which Yan Fu translated the book in the late Qing Dynasty,the difficulties he has met when translating it,his motives of translation,his contributions,and the limitations that have been embodied when he used the integration thoughts to translate the economic terms in The Wealth of Nations.Based on the above study,the main findings of this thesis are as follows: Yan Fu has mainly utilized three integration strategies when he translated the economic terms in the book,and he has concretely used two integration methods under the guidance of these strategies.And the three integration strategies are: accumulative wisdom,analogical imaginations,and example replacement.As a matter of fact,these three integration strategies are complementary and mutually reinforcing.Under the guidance of the above three strategies,Yan Fu has used these two integration methods: using existing terms and creating new terms.Through the application of the above translation integration strategies and methods,the economic terms translated by Yan Fu could be understood by target language readers,which has consequently promoted the dissemination and development of economics in China,and has also enriched the study of Yan Fu's translation integration thoughts at the same time.
