This report on the experience of English to Chinese simultaneous interpreting(SI)is based on the psychological training class dated from August 14 to August 18,2017 during which we learnt from a videoed academic lecture presented by the University of Washington with my role as an interpreter. This dissertation describes a SI task conducted by the author and analyzes the interpretation of the speech delivered by Pat Kuhl to discuss common difficulties of English to Chinese simultaneous interpreting as well as relevant coping strategies and solutions so as to accumulate experience in interpretation and enhance interpreting ability. This report is composed of four chapters. The first chapter is task description which presents the background and stylistic features of the speech as well as the research direction and analyzing approach. The second part is task process consisting of pre-interpreting preparation and interpretation process.Considering a great deal of professional knowledge and terminology involved in this interpreting practice, the author read some books related to developmental psychology, cognitive psychology and physiological psychology to learn about professional expressions before the task,at the same time, the author selected similar video materials to conduct mock interpretation so as to gain some experience and make predictions about the content of the lecture. The third part is case analysis.Based on relevance theory, the author analyzes the text by using syntactic linearity and simplification strategy and learns from the unsuccessful cases. The fourth part is post-interpretation summary which points out the problems that occurred during the interpreting process and summarizes the personal experience for better interpretation.
