A Report On The Translation Of The Oxford History Of Literary Translation In English Volume 4(Chapter2 And Section1-2 Of Chapter3)

This report is based on the translation of the chapter 2 and section1-2 of chapter3 of The Oxford History of Literary Translation in English Volume4 edited by Peter France and Kenneth Haynes.This series of works are important components of Translation History of English Literature.In this Volume,it mainly narrates the translation history of English literature between 1790 and 1900,showing us the background,status and development history of the English literature during that period by taking a wide variety of original contents from the literary works as examples and combining the motivation of different translators for translation.We can learn about the history of English literature during the late 18 th and 19 th century,let more readers know the development history of English literature during that period and know the great contributions made by translators to the dissemination of English literature.The part the writer of this report undertakes(chapter 2 and section1-2 of chapter3)is “Principles and Norms of Translation” and “The Translator”.The editors and original authors show us the principles and norms of literary translation that time by quoting plenty of literary works and their translated versions.As for these principles and norms,the editors gleaned a wide range of views from different critics that time and delivered their own ideas through game between these views;With regard to “The Translators”,their living situations,motivation for translation and social status were mainly related in the original text.Moreover,the translators were classified into different classes and types and well-described according to the circumstances then.This report is based on the theory of “adaptive transformation from the perspective of three dimensions” in Eco-translatology.The writer of this report will analyze the whole translation process from the perspective of linguistic,cultural,and communicative aspects by adopting the method of case study to struggle to insure accurate,reasonable representation and wipe out the obstacles in language itself,culture and communication existed between the target readers and the source text.This report consists of five parts: the first part is the introduction of this project;the second part is the preparation before translation including the analysis of linguistic features of the text,parallel texts,translation tools and teamwork;the third part is the translation theory(Eco-translatology)consisting of the basic connotation of Eco-translatology and principle of “three-dimension transformation” and its application in this report;the fourth part is the case analysis showing the examples from the perspective of “three-dimension adaptive transformation” in dealing with difficult words and expressions,culture-loaded words,long and complex sentences and cohesion(coherence)in translation;the last part is the conclusion covering the summary of experiences in translation and the deficiencies in this project and striving direction in future.
