The drama sometimes crosses the border, transcends the cultural circle, transcends the art form, and is reborn as a new appearance. When a drama is staged in other cultural circles,to be better accepted, many changes must be made such as language. And these changes will certainly bring about changes. This study explores the methods and characteristics of Shakespeare's masterpiece “Romeo and Juliet” when it was adapted into the Chinese Yue Opera and Japanese Takarazuka revue. From the viewpoint of the scenario, the Yue opera version changed the time, place and name into Chinese style, which is a typical adaptation of " Naturalization ".Almost all lyrics and lines are re-created,but they also retain some expressions that Chinese and Western people can resonate with, revealing the possibility of absorbing language elements. On the other hand, the Takarazuka revue version added songs and dances,it was adapted according to its own characteristics. However, almost all the lines used the original work and attached great importance to the original works. It is very close to the translation drama.About characters and human relationships, the Yue Opera version did not retain the original character. To be better accepted by the audience,it was adapted into the typical character of the Yue Opera.Although the Takarazuka revue version considers the actor's own characteristics,it is still based on the original work.In addition, the supporting characters of the Yue opera version have also been adapted in the context of Chinese culture. For example, changing a friend to an elder brother makes the protagonist's behavior more reasonable. On the contrary, the Takarazuka revue version focuses on friendship and emphasizes the friendship between men. From the viewpoint of the direction, the Yue Opera version used Chinese-style sets and costumes, and the Takarazuka revue version chose Shakespeare's style. In the crucial romantic expression, through different performance techniques,we can see two pairs of couples with different distances, but their touching love was well transmitted to their respective audiences. The Yue opera and the Takarazuka revue thought to be close in genre but showed a clear difference when performing "Romeo and Juliet".By using data such as video data, scripts, and pamphlet comparing the two,the Yue opera version completely transforms the Western cultural code of the original into Chinese cultural code, sharply adapted the lines, lyrics, characters, human relationships and so on.The Takarazuka revue version retains the original western culture code and attaches great importance to the original work.
