| Civil aviation transportation is under rapid growth nowadays.With the development of the globalization of aviation transportation and the internationalization of integrated operation,Chinese civil aviation is undergoing great changes to comply with the international standards and regulations.As the most fundamental and conductive standards of the civil aviation industry,the translation quality of the regulatory documents directly affects the safety and efficiency of civil aviation operation.However,with reference to the long-term working practice,the author found that the translation of the regulatory documents cannot meet the large demand at present both in quantity and quality.This thesis proves that Nida’s Functional Equivalence theory has a positive meaning towards the related translation quality through an analysis of a large number of words,sentences and discourse translation examples;especially for those informative texts that should be oriented by reader’s response,like civil aviation regulatory documents,the guidance of Functional Equivalence theory has a significant effect.From the viewpoint of Functional Equivalence,translators do not have to be fully loyal to the original text in translation process;instead,the equivalent response of target language readers could be taken as a standard for judging the translation quality.Under the guidance of Nida’s theory,this thesis summarizes different levels of translation methods by taking reference to materials like Operations Manual of airlines,ICAO conventions and annexes and IOSA Standard Manual,and at the same time puts forward three translation principles,which are information transferring equivalence,expressing effectiveness equivalence and readers’ response equivalence.Methods of literal translation,free translation,paraphrase could be used to improve the functional equivalence between the translated and original texts.These methods help to express the procedures and standard requirements in a more accurate way,and in the meanwhile realize the constraints function of civil aviation regulatory documents.In this thesis,the first chapter mainly introduces the current situation of the civil aviation regulatory documents translation and Functional Equivalence theory;the second chapter states literature Review of the previous study;the third chapter analyses the classifications and features of the civil aviation regulatory documents;the fourth chapter gives the translation methods on different levels;while the fifth chapter summarizes principles of the civil aviation regulatory documents translation in achieving Functional Equivalence.Due to time limitation and personal capability,this thesis cannot cover all the sources of civil aviation regulatory documents.Further study is still in need for the other translation methods. |
