The legend of Miao-Shan is a story about the localisation of an Indian deity in China.The jataka story of Guanyin in popular literature plays a leading role in spreading Avalokitesvara belief in all stratums of society.This paper focuses on the jataka story of Guanyin in novels,Bau Juan and operas,mainly analyzing their horizontal and vertical narration strategies.In the horizontal aspect,the works about the jataka theme of Guanyin show the evolution from concrete memory to memorial recall to different writing results.In the vertical aspect,novels and Bau Juan focus on the readability of the jataka theme of Guanyin while operas attach importance to the stage performance.In popular literature,which is about jataka theme,Miao-Shan plays the leading role,and other roles give impetus or resistance to the storyline,which makes these literary writings unfailing.The jataka story of Guanyin in popular literature contains the two main lines: one is the idea of filial piety,the other is the essence of filial piety.From the world of men to the hell(or the third space)to the blend space,which mingles hell and fairyland,the relationship between the idea of filial piety and the essence of filial piety,begin to reach a state from opposites to unity.In this process,the idea of filial piety and the essence of filial piety absorb everything essential of traditional Chinese culture.In essence,after the amalgamation of these filial pieties,a new Chinese folk filial piety appears.The jataka theme of Guanyin in popular literature provides a new way for the people in trouble,values the personal behavior performance,advises to accumulate well virtue,has the positive meaning to the purity of the social customs,and gives people the hope of eternal life in the other world.
