The Report on the Status of Chinese Language Life, written by the National Language Committee, has been published every year since 2006.Each year, the “hot words” of the previous year are summed up and counted. So far it has gone through more than a decade. As part of modern Chinese vocabulary,"hot words" have emerged in recent years as a large number of research results. In the Chinese teaching of foreign students,"hot words" are also components that should not be ignored. This article first defines the concept of “hot words”,takes the “hot words” of the decade from 2005 to 2014 as the research object, and takes the foreign students of the Chinese Language and Culture Institute of Jinan University as the survey objects, and has made known the status of “hot words”.A survey was conducted to try to analyze the factors affecting the status of the students’ "hot words" awareness. All linguistic materials are derived from the “The Report on the Status of Chinese Language Life”,a total of 36 target words.Among them,by analyzing the results of the survey without grouping and analyzing the linguistic factors affecting the status of the "hot words" for foreign students,we find that the composition of words and the number of syllables have little influence on the status of the words;the sources and semantic categories of hot words The period of time has an impact on the status of the students’ hot words.Grouping the survey results and analyzing the sociological factors affecting the status of the students’ knowledge of “hot words”.We find out whether they are of Chinese descent, family language use,the length of learning Chinese, the length of time to come to China, whether to test HSK,age, etc.are related to the degree of foreign students’ awareness of hot words;while gender and education level have no significant effect on the degree of foreign students’ awareness of “hot words”.The originality of this article lies first in the innovation of the word selection, and comprehensively examines the “hot words” from a diachronic perspective. The second is the innovativeness of the questionnaire design. In addition to the status of the “hot words,” the students’ learning approaches and learning attitudes were investigated, and relevant teaching inspirations were proposed for the investigation results, which has certain empirical significance.
