| The complicated relationship between language form and meaning has always been the study focus of linguistics,of which the indirect semantic phenomenon caused by the asymmetrical relationship between the form and the meaning has also been under discussion by many linguists.Under the perspective of the broad functionalism, both of pragmatics and systematic functional linguistics, which focus on the language application and the discourse analysis, have explored the indirect semantic phenomena.Although the research methods and the interpretation mechanisms of these two perspectives are quite different, the common concern of speech function and context as well as the overlapping of research objects makes the academic community propose that the two perspectives complement each other gradually under this topic. The contrast analysis study for indirect semantic phenomena under the two perspectives along with the complementarity hypotheses begin. However, these comparative analyses have only conducted preliminary possible hypotheses from the theoretical level and have not been able to fully and thoroughly dig out their similarity and difference as well as the complementation. Therefore, through the comparison and analysis of the explanatory mechanisms under three representative theories, namely, the conversational implicature theory, the indirect speech act theory and the interpersonal grammar metaphor theory, and from the aspects of the research objects overlapping, the specific role of the language function, the degree of participation of the contextual factors, this thesis tries to locate the theory and application basis for the complementarity of the two perspectives for indirect semantic phenomena. On the one hand,it is possible to clarify the operating modes, limitations and characteristics of the respective interpretation mechanisms of the two perspectives, and find interfaces for their complementarity; On the other hand, through the comparative study under the two perspectives,it could provide direction and reference for the further research of the indirect semantic phenomena, and supplement the analysis of the complicated relationships between words and meanings. The thesis consists of five chapters. The introduction discusses the research tradition and present status of the indirect semantic phenomena study, especially the comparative research under the perspective of pragmatics and systematic functional linguistics. It also clarifies the existing research limitations and proposes the research direction and significance of this thesis.Chapter One starts with the indirect semantic phenomenon under two perspectives of pragmatics and systematic functional linguistics, and analyzes its problems and limitations in the view of the definition system, the evaluation method, and the research scope in detail.Besides,it also defines the common comparative basis of the two perspectives to provide the foundation for further researches.Chapter Two begins with the logical direction of the two interpretation mechanisms.Based on their different language concepts, the essence of the two at the logical level is also analyzed.Chapter Three discusses the detailed characteristics of the two modes of interpretation mechanism. It defines the main distinguishing features of dynamic reasoning and static comprehensive analysis, and proposes the differences between the dynamic conversion of subject and object, and the choice of the role of speech.Chapter Four begins with the context that is the external factor common to the two mechanisms, and grasps the differences between the two explanation mechanisms from their different way of involvement and participation methods, which further provides the basis for the complementary analysis of the following part.Chapter Five puts forward the specific aspects and methods of complementarity on the basis of Chapter Four, and provides possible direction for the future study for complementary possibilities. |
