As a way of anthropology researching, ethnographic research methods aim to involve researchers into the environment of the research subject for immersive observation, and the purpose of the research is accomplished in the process of communication and observation. As an art form, documentary records the changes of times and society through lens and sound, and people, who are the social subjects, naturally become the most important role in documentaries. When the camera turns to a real person, there is a complex connection between the photographer and the photographed. From “Nanook of the North”,which was produced in 1922 and was known as the first real documentary, this issue has become a topic worth discussing in the process of documentary creation. How to deal with the relationship between the photographer and the photographed becomes the key step of whether the documentary can effectively reflect its authenticity. This paper attempts to start from my own experience in the creation of character documentaries, raise the issue of long-term thinking to theory, and explore the relationship between the photographer and the photographed in documentaries from the perspective of ethnographic methodology.
