A Report On C-E Translation Of Crossing The Silk Road (Chapter 3)

The paper intends to report on the C-E translation process of Crossing the Silk Road(Chapter 3)in light of Newmark’s translation theory.The source text belongs to informative text,among which there are lots of culture-loaded words together with the evidences of historical books.According to different text functions,Newmark divides texts into three types: expressive text,informative text and vocative text.He subsequently develops two translation strategies: semantic translation and communicative translation.Therefore,the report focuses on the guiding role of Newmark’s text-type translation theory for the C-E translation of the informative text.Firstly,the author comprehensively analyzes the language features of the original texts.Secondly,in line with Newmark’s text-type theory,the author decides on the use of communicative translation as the main translation strategy in practice,with the attempt to tender a translation that is accurate and precise in information delivery,and to the easy acceptance of the target readers.The report also discusses the specific translation skills adopted in the language transferring practice based upon a carefully conducted comparison between Chinese and English in terms of word and sentence uses,such as transliteration with annotation,literal translation with annotation,free translation with annotation,amplification,omission in order to achieve a target-language-oriented translation.The report consists of the following five parts: The first part introduces the research background and main content of the translation project;The second part briefly reviews the related literature,tells the key and difficult points of the translation,and analyses the text features of the translation;The third part mainly studies Newmark’s text-type theory and its guidance in translation practice;The fourth part presents some most representative translation samples in the elaboration of how translation strategy previously made has been successfully achieved through apt uses of translation skills;The last part is conclusion,summing up the translation experience gained and pointing out the inadequacies in the translation practice to be further improved.
