Fran?ois Cheng is a famous Chinese-French scholar,poet and writer.He is called "the ferryman between Chinese and Western cultures",because of his outstanding contribution in the communication and dissemination of Chinese and Western cultures.Cheng's novels carried a great deal of material and spiritual cultural information.They are the author's understanding of the communication,collision and dialogue between Chinese and Western culture,as well as his views on individual spirit,living world and ideal state.The essence of Chinese and Western culture influenced his literary creation deeply.With an approach of close reading,this dissertation explores the Chinese and Western culture elements in the novels of Cheng to further expand the perspective of Fran?ois Cheng,and enrich the research space of Chinese and foreign culture.The introduction makes a simple summary of Cheng's cross-cultural process and the literature activities and briefly summarizes the status of research on him both home and abroad.And then this part points out the significance of this article and the related methods employed.The first chapter expounds the deep influence of Confucian and Taoist culture and the traditional art technique on Cheng's novel creation.And analyses the novel of Cheng from the aspect of Chinese traditional culture.Confucian and Taoist culture in Cheng's novel are presented clearly,traditional aestheticsendows his novel with soul.The second chapter focuses on the discussion of western cultural factors in Cheng's novel.In a sense,Cheng inherited the fundamental tradition of Western Europe's culture,his strenuously pursuit accords with the West thoughts.Thus the multilayer connotation of Cheng's works can be interpreted profoundly,and their absorption of Western culture and art can be explored deeply.The third chapter analyses the rationality of the integration view between Chinese and Western culture,and gives an exhaustive interpretation of Cheng's the Three-element Theory,and explores the tragic aesthetic implication and cross-cultural characteristics of Cheng's novel from the angle of the cultural integration.The epilogue concludes the whole article.Cheng's novel characters show the spirit of Confucian,Taoist and Christ.Cheng inherits traditional artistic techniques in terms of artistic expression.His novels continue the characteristics of traditional Chinese poetic aesthetics,and also possess the characteristics of European and American fiction types.The comparing consciousness between the East and West culture can be reflected in novel and its cultural significance deserves attention.
