For a long time, the human beings have recognized the importance of the interculturalcommunication. For this reason, there are magnificent feats, for example the Silk Road, thepilgrimage of the monk Xuan-zang in India and so on. Similarly, several centuries later, in the19thcentury, the Western missionaries had arrived in China, the communication between China andWestern countries became increasingly and frequently. And in the modern times in China, thereare so many scholars who are familiar with both Chinese and Western culture, so the works andstudies on subject of intercultural communication are numerous. The Sino-French andFranco-Chinese communication has a very long history, for example, Victor Segalen is therepresentative of the19thcentury, and Fran ois Cheng is that of20thcentury.Born in1929in China, Fran ois Cheng moved to France in1948. Since that year, hecontributed himself to introduce the Chinese culture to the French public. Therefore, he is calledsincerely by the French media as tireless ferryman between the Chinese and French culture.His studies, versions and books have a great impact in France. In2002, Fran ois Cheng waselected by the French Academy and he is the first Asian member for four hundred years. Hisworks relates to several areas: the Western and Chinese paintings, the versions and studies ofChinese poetry, what’s more, he creates by himself the literary works. His first published novel isLe Dit de Tianyi, who was awarded the Femina in1998. Through the miseries suffered by theprotagonists, the novel aims to show their attitude toward the life and the beauty. And the writerhimself wants to reflet his own opinions of beauty to his readers.This dissertation aims to seek the philosophic meditation of beauty of Fran ois Cheng by hisselecting two representative books. In the first part, it is the quest of why man has the desire forbeauty and then we seek the conditions for hosting the beauty; the second part focuses on themanifestations of beauty; in the third part, we did a search on the role of beauty in human life. Although there are the poor in the daily life, the beauty is the weapon which is indispensable toprotect and save ourselves.
