With the development of globalization, projects of nuclear power energy are involved in the cooperation among countries. The author participated in C-E translation of The Preliminary Safety Analysis Report for Nuclear Power Plant(PSAR for short)of a nuclear power project between China and U.K.from late 2016 to early 2018.The translation quality of PSAR determines whether this nuclear power project will be approved,so an accurate and idiomatic translation is required. In the report, the problems the author encountered in translation are analyzed in detail, including improper literal translation, mistranslation, and inconsistency of terminology;mistranslation of polysemy and misuse of semi-techncial words for common words;improper use of subject, lack of prepositions for logics, and logical disorder in translating long sentences.According to the text typology proposed by Peter Newmark,PSAR falls into informative text for which the approach of communicative translation can be applied, which focuses on the communicative effect of the target text on the basis of accurately conveying the information of the source text.Under the guidance of communicative translation approach, the author adopts adaptation to solve the problems in translating terminology, polysemy and semi-technical words, and free translation to solve problems in sentence translation.A tentative study made on the C-E translation of PSAR in this report is hoped to provide some suggestions for translators in the field of nuclear power energy.
