Since Professor Wen Qiufang proposed the theory of Production-based Approach(POA)on foreign language teaching,Chinese scholars have actively explored the feasibility and practicality of its application in foreign language teaching,and some scholars have acquired certain teaching achievements in college EFL classroom through its practical application.English reading teaching is of great significance in English education of vocational colleges.However,guided by the traditional teaching model,English reading teaching in vocational colleges values input over output in a teacher-centered mode,which severely hinders the realization of vocational English teaching objective of cultivating applied talents with comprehensive qualities.Therefore,this study aims to probe four research questions: 1)Does the implementation of POA in reading teaching improve students' reading proficiency? 2)Does the implementation of POA in reading teaching stimulate students' reading interests? 3)Will students' autonomous learning ability be enhanced by the implementation of POA in reading teaching? 4)What are students' attitudes towards the implementation of POA in reading teaching?This study conducted a comparative experiment of English reading teaching for twelve weeks in two freshman classes of accounting major from a vocational college in Yunnan province.Class 1701 was the control class taught by the traditional reading teaching model,whereas class 1703 was the experimental class guided by the POA reading teaching model.This study adopted a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods.Its research instruments consisted of reading pre-test and post-test,questionnaire and interview.The collected data were analyzed by means of Excel and SPSS 23.0.The results from data analysis indicate that the POA teaching model of English reading in vocational college has exerted a positive influence on students' reading learning,which is mainly embodied in four aspects: students' reading proficiency,reading interests,autonomous learning and their attitudes towards the teaching model.First,POA teaching model of English reading has effectively improved students' reading proficiency.Second,POA emphasizes the teaching design of communicative output tasks of reading,which significantly stimulates students' interests in reading.Third,students' independent thinking ability and autonomous learning ability have been cultivated through completing communicative output tasks of reading.Fourth,students hold positive attitudes towards the POA teaching model of English reading and deem that their language output competence and critical thinking ability have been enhanced.According to the major findings,this study provides some suggestions and enlightenment for English reading teaching in vocational college: 1)The teacher should design communicative and practical reading output tasks so as to stimulate students' reading interests and improve their English communicative competence.2)The teacher should bring the scaffolding role into full play in English teaching and provide students with professional guidance in order to maximize the teaching efficiency.3)Students should improve their autonomous learning ability through completing reading output tasks rather than passively receive the knowledge imparted by the teacher.From the perspective of the teaching model of English reading in vocational college,this study has provided empirical support for the POA teaching model,and meanwhile expects more valuable teaching research results from future scholars to enrich and perfect the POA teaching design continually.
