A Report On E-C Translation Of Eleventh Hour (Chapters 1-4)

The thesis is a translation report on detective fiction Eleventh Hour(chapters 1-4)written by American author Catherine Coulter.The fiction mainly tells a story of a FBI agent Dane Carver whose twin brother was killed,and Dane detects the case and finds out the murderer with the help of the Sherlocks.Catherine Coulter is famous for writing detective fiction and sixty-five of her novels are New York Times Bestsellers.Till now,she is still creating new works.In the translation report,the writer of translation report first has an analysis on the features of detective fiction and the writing style of Catherine Coulter.Then a description of the difficulties encountered in the translating practice has been provided,such as the translation of proper names and long sentences.And later a detailed illustration of corresponding methods has been produced,for instance,literal translation with annotation,modulation and four-character structure and the use of following the original syntactic order and reinventing sentence structure in the translation of long sentence.The writer tries to make the target text fluent,natural and faithful to the source text and keep the original writing style and language features.Through the translation practice,the translator has understood that practice is the sole criterion for testing truth and improving translation skills needs substantial practice under the guidance of translation theory and method.Meanwhile,it is an essential skill to master how to search for information and make use of tools.More importantly,translation practice needs patience and persistence and to be a qualified translator,one needs cautious attitude and constant modification.Detective fiction is a kind of popular literature and is popular with readers both home and abroad.It is hoped that the practice can bring some knowledge of Catherine Coulter and her works,provide some help to future translators of Eleventh Hour.It is also hoped that the practice can contribute,if anything,in the cultural exchange.The translator hopes to introduce the excellent detective fiction to domestic readers and play the role as a bridge between cultures and this translation report can serve as a reference for other translators in translating detective fiction.
