Literary translation is an activity of translating literary works of one language into another. With the development of globalization, more and more foreign literature works have entered the Chinese market, resulting in growing demands for literary translation.Fiction is widely enjoyed by readers for its exciting plot and nuanced characters. Thus, the translation of foreign fiction plays an important role in the spread and communication of world literature works. The text of this translation practice report is selected from the first chapter of Alice McDermott’s realist novel The Ninth Hour.Realistic novels focus on realistic, objective and concrete descriptions with strong critical or revealing characteristic. And they are flexible and diverse in their forms of expression. So,Chinese readers have some difficulties in reading English texts. And there is no Chinese version of this novel at present. In order to test the level of translation and improve the translation ability, the translator chose this novel as the translated text. The communicative translation proposed by Peter Newmark attempts to produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the original.Based on the introduction and understanding of communicative translation theory, this translation practice report makes a concrete analysis of the complex inner world and environmental description of the characters in the novel by focusing on the difficult points encountered in the process of translation. Then, under the guidance of communicative translation theory, this thesis tries to analyze the difficulties encountered in translation from the aspects of lexical and syntactic aspects, and apply five translation methods including semantic extension, conversion of word class, addition, the adjustment of word order, and division to resolving the difficulties with specific cases,so as to reproduce the contextual meaning of the original text as much as possible and try to improve the accuracy and acceptability of the translation. |
