This is a report on the Chinese translation from an English book Less Medicine,More Health: 7 Assumptions That Drive Too Much Medical Care(Assumption 3)by an American author Dr.H.Gilbert Welch.The English book was published by Beacon Press in March,2015.The book mainly tells the 7 assumptions about medical care in people's minds and then discusses the 7 corresponding truths in real life.In a new perspective,this book shows why too much medical care is harmful to people's health.It also analyzes the possible reasons for the phenomenon.With strong readability,this book provides some experience and enlightenment and has referable value for all people especially patients and physicians.Up to now,there is no Chinese version of the book.The translator has chosen Assumption 3 as the source text.Obviously,the text will encourage people to question and abandon the inherent idea and remind the readers that excessive and blind medical treatment is not necessarily good.This book is not a typical academic and professional text,but as a popular medical book,it has its own characteristics.It features itself in many medical words and many long and complex sentences.After showing the background and significance of the translation and the difficulties as well,the report focuses on various translation methods and techniques employed,both the lexically and the syntactically.In order to be faithful to the source text,various methods are adopted including borrowing,conversion,semantic extension,division and reversion.The translation practice tells the translator that translation is not an easy task.Especially working on the text translation between two totally different languages,only full comprehension can lead to fluent expression.In the process,the translator also needs to master certain professional knowledge and maintains a serious attitude.The author of the report hopes to understand and introduce foreign information about health care through this translation practice as well as to gain in health literature translation,and provide some useful reference to peer translators.
