This thesis is a translation report. The source text is the famous American juvenile literature writer Laurie Halse Anderson's English novel The Impossible Knife of Memory(Chapter 1-27).The novel is under the background of war and tells a story around the heroes named Hayley and her father,Andy.Hayley and her father survived in the war after they escaped from the cruelty war. They could came back to their hometown and started their new life. Finally, they forgot the painful memory that the war brought to them. The translation difficulties encountered in the process of translation mainly are the translation of rhetoric devices and sentences. Therefore, the translator attempts to illustrate the language style, rhetorical style or implication meaning of the source text and express the writer's emotions of the original text with the guidance of famous English translation theorist Peter Newmark's semantic translation theory. In terms of Newmark's semantic translation, the translator adopts different translation methods and strategies in the process of translation. As for the translation of rhetoric, the translator adopts extension and compensation in order to express implication meaning and correspond to the context of the original. Moreover,it also attempts to make the target readers have a better understanding of the original. While translating some short sentences, the translator adopts change of voice and supplementation so as to demonstrate the description of portrait and psychology better or faithful to the original.Meanwhile,in order to make the expressions more unobstructed, the translator adopts inversion and division to the translation of some long or complex sentences for the purpose of corresponding to Chinese expression ways and the context of the original.Through the translation practice, the translator realizes the difficulties in translating juvenile literature writings. The translator maintains that Newmark's semantic translation has an instructive meaning for the translation practice of juvenile novel, because it faithfully reproduces the language style and central meaning of the original text.In addition, the translator's level is far from satisfaction, therefore,I should not only consolidate my language, cultural and translation theories knowledge but also should broaden my horizon as well as enhance my translation abilities in different translation practices in order to the translation text of highest quality.
